The One Who… Never Slumbers Nor Sleeps
My brother got married this weekend!!! Woohoo!! Yay!!
So, that means there were lots of family festivities going on. Therefore, this is going to be a shorter blog. But, I feel like it will be impactful for some of you guys!
Yesterday, as I was getting ready for the wedding, I was thinking about what to title this particular blog, and I felt the Holy Spirit whisper an idea. We are going to do a little series called, “The One Who…” I feel like the Lord wants me to highlight some of His attributes in ways that hopefully will encourage you!
Today, let’s talk about “The One Who… Never Slumbers Nor Sleeps”.
“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, He who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil; He will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth forevermore.”
—Psalm 121
I have been on, what feels like, a very long, health journey. Don’t worry we’re not really gonna get into it. However, one thing that continuously comes up is the importance of getting enough sleep. And I’m sure you’ve also heard this, maybe even heard or read the statistics of what happens when we get enough sleep verses when we don’t.
Now, I don’t know about you, but this is quite a struggle for me. Not because I’m not tired, but more so because I feel like I’m missing out on something if I go to bed early. (cough, cough, Fake Rest)
This week, it was quite a topic of conversation between the Lord and I. I really started to analyze and take mental notes on exactly how much sleep I have actually been getting. Not enough if you were wondering. But, as the conversation with the Lord unfolded, He reminded me of something. For the Hebrew people, the day starts at sundown, not in the morning.
Why? Go back to Genesis 1 and you will see it over and over. “…and there was evening and there was morning, the (fill in the blank) day.” The day starts in the evening. I have heard Kristi McLelland teach on how they believe the day starts with rest. It begins with God working, and then we wake up and join whatever He’s been working on. We partner with Him in the “restoration, repair and renewal” that He’s already been working on throughout the night.
This week, I’ve been reflecting on the beauty and the power of really living this way— the day starting with a trust that the Lord will be my keeper. The day beginning with rest, restoration, repair and renewal. I think about His mercies being new in the morning, because He has continued to work through the night.
It has given me a different perspective on sleep. I’m now kinda wondering if when I don’t get enough sleep, if I’m actually missing out on something greater than the movie I really thought I needed to watch. What if getting enough sleep is another way of surrendering to Him and His ways? What if it’s surrendering to a work He wants to do in me that I can only receive when I’m truly at rest— open and willing to receive without all the noise of the world, or in my own head, getting in the way? I’m kinda thinking this might is true.
So your encouragement for the week:
Go to bed early. Get enough sleep. Don’t miss out on what the Lord wants to do while you’re asleep. Surrendering, trusting and resting in Him as your keeper. Then as you wake up, ask Him how you can join Him in the work He has already begun. Because He is “The One Who… Never Slumbers Nor Sleeps”.
